Frequently Asked Questions
General FAQ's
Q What should I bring along to the Rec Centre?
A
Remember to bring your membership card, a small sweat towel and a water bottle. Filtered water is available, so you can bring an empty water bottle and fill it up at one of the water fountains.
Q What do I wear?
A
You should be comfortable so wear light, breathable clothes that you can move in. Wear only closed shoes such as cross-trainers or running shoes. You may want to also bring a top to keep you warm when you leave the Rec Centre in cooler months.
Q Will someone help me to get started when I get there?
A
Absolutely. Most memberships include a 60-minute exercise consultation with a fitness professional to get you started and all members have the opportunity to participate in an orientation programme Ready, Set, Go! This involves a series of introductory seminars and workshops to assist you in getting started. You'll feel at home in no time.
Q Do I need to bring my own towel to the Rec Centre?
A
Yes. Bring a small sweat towel to use while exercising although we do have towels for hire at a small charge. You should also bring your own bath towel if you are going to take a shower after your session.
Q Can I lose weight through exercise?
A
Along with balanced eating habits, exercise is your most effective way to manage weight long term. Exercise burns energy, builds tone, improves fitness - and overall wellbeing.
Q How much exercise will I need to get fit and lose weight?
A
SPARC
recommends at least 30 minutes of exercise most days a week to stay active and healthy.
Q Once I've joined, will there be any add-on costs?
A
FREE is what we all want to hear. All cardio, weights, group exercise classes and use of the sports hall and squash courts is free. Most memberships also include free regular health and fitness checks to keep you on track. We don't want to charge you for what you're not going to use so if REV indoor cycling and endless pool use is not included in your membership they can be easily added as an upgrade. Some services such as personal training, rehabilitation and activity courses are extra BUT you do get a discount as a valued member.
Q The Rec Centre is just another fitness centre right?
A
No way! We do have all the services and equipment you would expect to find at any gym but we also have some other great features including squash courts, sports hall and endless pools not to mention our friendly knowledgeable staff, safe no-pressure environment and highly competitive memberships. Don't take our word for it - why not book in for a no obligation tour today 07 838 4177.
Q How much does it cost and can I afford it?
A
Our members come in all shapes and sizes. That's why we offer a range of flexible membership options to suit every individual. Your health and fitness will cost you less than a cup of coffee a day!
Exercise Class FAQ's
Q I have never done group exercise before. Can I simply come along?
A
A firm favourite among our existing members, we have no doubt that you will love our group exercise classes. So simply grab your trainers and a sweat towel, dress comfortably so you can move, and make your way to a class of your choice. Get a timetable from reception or view online. Some classes are suitable for advanced members only; this will be indicated on the timetables. Look out for beginners' classes that will help to familiarise you with a specific type of exercise.
Q Do I have to pay extra for classes?
A
No. As a Rec Centre member, classes are free and included in your membership.
Q Some of the classes look like fun, but my coordination and balance are rubbish.
A
Some classes involve dance moves and require a little more coordination than others, but that doesn't mean they're out of bounds. Our fitness instructors will guide you through specific techniques. Focus on what you enjoy and try different classes until you find one that works for you.
Q Which classes will help me to lose weight?
A
Group exercise classes are excellent for weight loss, because they generally require a lot of energy and tend to burn lots of calories. Without getting too scientific, a good rule of thumb is to do classes and exercises that get your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes per session, at least three times a week. What's more, attending classes where the focus is on toning as well as cardio will improve shape and build muscle, which can help to rev up your metabolism.
