+ Helpful Tips When Dining Out

Guidelines

  • Opt for tomato/brown based sauces versus creamy or cheese sauces
  • Choose foods that are barbequed, grilled, steamed or stir fried versus pan fried or deep fried
  • Instead of ordering French fries opt for vegetables, salad or extra bread (not herb or garlic which is usually soaked in butter)
  • Order less food and keep to only one or two courses
  • Trim any visible fat off your meat and remove the skin from chicken
  • Order the salad dressing on the side then you can control how much of the dressing you eat
  • Have one glass of water for every glass of alcohol and plan to have only one or two alcoholic drinks with your meal
  • Keep a jug of water on your table topped up at all times – you will drink less alcohol and stay hydrated
  •  If choosing foods from a buffet or spread

- Opt for fruit, vegetables, salads, wholegrain breads, lean chicken and lean meats
- Avoid heavy sauces, fatty meats such as salamis, pastries
- Don’t overload the plate with pasta, rice and potato but aim to fill ½ the plate with vegetables, ¼ of the plate with meats and the last ¼ with potato, rice, pasta and bread
- For desserts choose fruit based desserts, custards, sorbets and natural yoghurts
